Now a new law is coming into force, and another is being spoken of, which could potentially make the roads that little bit safer, and that’s always good news for drivers. Read on for a sneak preview. Theory Tests to Get Harder Drivers working for haulage companies may be pleased to learn that the driving theory test is set to get harder to pass. The Driving Standards Agency has announced that it will stop publishing the answers to the tests in order to make them more difficult, and put more emphasis on teaching people how to drive rather than just how to pass a test. This will come as a welcome move to all experienced drivers. All the information will still be contained within the Highway Code, so learners can still find what they need to know, but it will become slightly more difficult for candidates to pass without really knowing everything that they have to. The whole aim of all of this is to improve the amount of understanding that new drivers have, so that they can apply their knowledge more effectively when they are actually on the road. Calls for Rural Road Test There are also calls for driving on rural roads to become a mandatory requirement of all driving tests. The issue was raised by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), and is aimed at helping younger drivers to stay safe on these smaller roads. Anyone working for haulage companies may well know about the danger posed by small country roads. In fact, over 80% of serious and fatal accidents occur on smaller roads, compared to less than 20% on larger roads such as motorways. By making sure that new drivers get experience on country roads whilst they learn to drive, they could become safer (knowing how to react in certain situations) and will certainly end up driving more safely as a result of this knowledge. Will This Lead to Safer Roads? Anyone working for haulage companies knows that the roads can be dangerous places, and that sometimes beginner drivers pose a particular risk if they are unsure how to deal with certain circumstances. Anyone who drives for a living will be pleased if these changes go through because they will undoubtedly make for safer roads overall. This will mean that drivers face less risk when they head out each day to make their deliveries, and that can only be a good thing, surely.
